Nafplio: The Romantic First Capital of Greece

The Three Fortresses of Nafplio

• Palamidi Castle: A magnificent Venetian fortress crowning the city from a height of 216 meters. To reach the top on foot, you can climb the legendary 999 steps (actually 857), which reward you with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Argolic Gulf. The fortress also houses the historic cell where the military leader Theodoros Kolokotronis was imprisoned.

• Bourtzi: The small, picturesque water fortress built on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi, positioned right at the harbor’s entrance. It is the undisputed emblem of Nafplio and can be reached in just a few minutes via small shuttle boats from the waterfront.

• Acronafplia: The oldest citadel of Nafplio, also known as Its Kale. It offers a scenic, easy walking path along its ancient walls, providing sweeping views of the old town and Arvanitia beach below.

The Old Town and Historic Alleys

Nafplio’s Old Town is an absolute dream to explore, filled with beautifully preserved neoclassical mansions, elegant balconies, and paved pedestrian paths.

• Syntagma Square: The central and most historic square of the city, framed by monumental buildings such as the Venetian Arsenal (now housing the Archaeological Museum) and the Vouleftikon (the first Parliament of the modern Greek nation).

• The Arvanitia Promenade: One of the most romantic coastal walks in Greece. This paved pedestrian path hugs the rocky base of Acronafplia, starting from the edge of the harbor and winding its way to Arvanitia beach, with the sea splashing right beside you.

• Historic Churches: The Church of Agios Spyridon, outside of which Greece's first Governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated, and the Cathedral of Agios Georgios, featuring impressive replicas of famous Renaissance paintings.
