Ancient Olympia: Archaeological site & Archaeological Museum

Ancient Olympia, the archeological site of the first Olympic Games, in 776 B.C., lies in the lush valley formed between the Alfios and Kladeos rivers. The temple of Zeus in antiquity was housing one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, which Pheidias had created. You will also see the temple of Hera, the shrine of Pelops, the Council house where the athletes took the Olympic oath, the Treasury houses, the Gymnasium, and the Palestrae where they used to exercise for a month prior to the Games. Finally, you will reach the stadium, where the marble starting blocks are still in position. Visit the Archeological Museum, only a short walk from the Olympia site itself. There you will find a collection of Greek sculpture, as well as treasures that have been unearthed over a century of excavations. The museum is also home to the famous “Hermes of Praxiteles” statue as well as the statue of the winged Nike.

After all that you can have a short break in the modern town of Olympia, for coffee or shopping (about 30minutes).

Klio’s farmhouse

A short walk along the country road will bring you into a garden filled with fruit trees and vegetables where you will discover the “unknown Olympia” under the shade as you chat about life on a small farm. Try the seasonal fruit platter accompanied by fresh juice and coffee or the homemade aperitif. Then, accompany Klio as she guides you through her collection of old and new tools used for rural activities. These are housed in a building about a hundred years old, once used for the supplementary work on the farm.

Top off your visit with “diples“, a traditional sweet with honey. Mrs. Roula, herself, will prepare them before you as she unfolds the dough and the secret recipe for this mouth- watering dessert.

Olympia Land Winery

Following the “Wine Roads”, Olympia Land, a family-owned winery lies in the valley of the river Kladeos just 2 kilometers from the heart of Ancient Olympia. The facilities of the winery are surrounded by beautiful roses, vineyards, and olive trees. The family will welcome you and walk you through the vineyards, the production area, and the cellar with the oak barrels. Release your senses and enjoy the wines, olive oil, olives, and other delicacies in the winery.

Koufolias olive-oil Mill

Maintaining the same passion and love for over 50 years, the “Koufolias olive-oil Mill” continued the agricultural tradition focusing with great effort to develop and update alternative ways in the production of high-quality extra virgin olive-oil. Here you can see the Olive press open-air museum, with 100 years of history and the beautiful ancient Olive Tree ‘’Koroneiki’’. At the end of the tour, you will try Organic extra virgin olive-oil, the Protected Geographical Indication Olympia Extra Virgin Olive-Oil, as well as, olives with rosemary, garlic or lemon with fresh homemade bread.
